COLOUR POP WITH PHOTOSHOP

COLOUR POP USING PHOTOSHOP 7,
A later version will do the same job.

I searched online for a way to colour pop a full colour picture after making the image gray. Several items appeared but took far longer than I wanted to spend to get the colour pop effect. Somebody told me that the effect was known as PHOTOSHOCK, but there is no reference for photo-shop to do this. I decided it was indeed colour popping & watched a few tutorials online & decided to investigate this effect further by trial & error. It is very easy to do & for your basic colour pop is a quick & easy option. So the following is what I came up with.

COLOUR POP AN IMAGE WHICH STARTED IN COLOUR

First of all you need a picture that you can colour pop, I chose one from google images choosing one that was a decent pixel size. After downloading the image I saved it on my Hard drive, so I open up photo-shop and open the picture.

This picture is the
one I chose to use,
it is Holly Willoughby.
Chosen for the reason
to make the image gray,
then to pop the bikini
out in colour.

So open the image and you will get,

Next, simply click Image, Adjustments, Desaturate. This will make the image Gray.

Once you have got this far it is time to start making the areas you want in colour, so using the paintbrush zoom in to the picture using CTRL and +, to zoom out CTRL and-. Once zoomed in choose the paint brush with a line through (5th icon down on the left toolbar -the icon on the right) & make the brush smaller and bigger as you need. If you maximize the picture window you wont have to search too far for the other areas, I am going to make the bikini top back into colour. After a few clicks you will see the bikini top starting to get it's colour back.

If you make a mistake or 2 don't panic as every mouse click is saved so just delete the last history brush & retry again. There is another way which is easily accomplished and that is to use the lasso magnetic tool, I use this tool myself because once you have selected the area you want, it will not paint outside the selection. You may want to make just Holly in colour & the lasso tool is great because you can do it in bits. I am now going to use the lasso magnetic to show the basic principal use for just the bikini top.

The tool that is needed is the
icon 2 down on the left.
It is a triangle with an arrow
at the top & a line at the bottom.
If you hold down the mouse for a
second or 2 you will be able
to choose the magnetic lasso tool.
Once selected you can start tracing
around the bikini in my situation.
If you click every few 10mm's it will
control it more precisely.

So below is what you should see after selecting the part you want. Make sure that your last click is on the 1st click you made on starting your selection. If you mess up in-between as I also do just double click & start again or do it in sections. It only took about 3 minutes to select it all.

If you look closely at the picture you will see what looks like a perforation mark all around the bikini which we can now paint with any size brush as it will only colour inside the selection. Obviously if you try to paint outside the selection, it will do nothing. Once completed you will have the result you were looking for, to isolate part if a picture to show in colour & if you want to do more than 1 selection then reselect what you want & do as you have just done. This is my finished product & now all that remains is to save the image as ie. JPEG with a different name to avoid deleting your master. When I take a project on I only work from a copy in a different folder but if you don't, Photo-shop will ask you if you want to save the changes to the original on exit to which your answer will be NO. This is my finished item before saving followed by the saved JPEG image.

Just for an example, I selected the bikini then clicked select/inverse then painted the image excluding the bikini top. Below is what I got. I hope this blog helps someone to quickly achieve the colour popping effects without having to do masks. It took some time for me to achieve this quick way to colour pop, but now I know, I can do it within 4 - 8 minutes when compared to a 20 minute video tutorial to achieve the same result using filters & masks is a great way of saving time.

GOOD LUCK COLOUR POPPERS
